Ringworm Puppy

A quarantined puppy with ringworm at BAWA.

Ringworm Puppy - There is a quarantine section at the top of the stairs for puppies infected with ringworm.  They are all huddled together right behind the wire gate with one little black puppy on the wrong side, outside the gate.  There’s a pretty view of rice fields behind them.  He’s so small he can fit [...]

Puppy Socialising

A puppy rescued by BAWA currently in quarantine until he can be adopted out.

A young vet student studying in Scotland, volunteers at BAWA for a couple of weeks, helping with ambulance call outs and socialising dogs awaiting adoption.

Loving Arms

Rescued puppy in the arms of a BAWA volunteer.

A young Australian volunteer has the “job” of cuddling, socialising and walking puppies that have been rescued by BAWA.

Behind Bars

Rescued puppies at BAWA.

Young puppies wait behind bars at the Bali Animal Welfare Association clinic.  Dumped in a village temple and rescued by BAWA they wait for food, a pat and eventually a new home.

Labrador

A Labrador rescued by BAWA

A trend is starting in Bali where having a breed dog is a symbol of prestige and these days it’s not uncommon to see Labradors, Rottweilers and other pedigrees both big and small on the streets.  Sadly the Balinese don’t value their own native canines the same way and who can blame them?  Despite the [...]

New Trawlers

Newly built fishing trawlers, Benoa Harbour, Bali

New built fishing trawlers in Benoa Harbour, Bali, are slightly reminiscent of paddle steamers with their balustraded decks and big curved prows.  Made of fibreglass and looking like wood these boats only have the classic maroon anti-fouling paint on their hulls.

The trawlers in Benoa Harbour, Bali, are moored together in clumps of colours and nationalities, Taiwanese, Chinese, Vietnamese and Indonesian.  The harbour is a painters palette of jumbled hues; blocks of green, maroon and blue, trims of red, white and navy. One group of trawlers was just plain white with a little accent in the [...]

Leaning Trawlers

Benoa Harbour: boats are tied so closely together that some decks are on a precariously slippery lean.

Benoa Harbour is a crazy mix of bright colours on the trawlers of mixed Asian nationalities.  The boats are tied so closely together that some decks are on a precariously slippery lean and the hulls show the wear and tear of the tough lives the fishermen lead.

Stranded

A trawler purposely stranded on the tidal flats of Benoa Harbour during low tide for hull maintenance.

Trawlers are routinely stranded on the tidal flats of Benoa Harbour during low tide chiefly for hull maintenance purposes.

This wreck has been a feature of Benoa Harbour for many years and shows where shallow water is during low tide.  It’s also useful as an anchor during high tide while low tide provides an excellent opportunity for hull maintenance.
