Tanah Lot is a temple on a rock formation accessible only at low tide near the village of Beraban not far north of the Kuta shopping district.
It’s a stunning place to visit, especially at sunset and hawkers around the island will tell you it’s one of Bali’s must see destinations. The spirituality of the place can be overtaken by the extreme commercialist onslaught brought on by the maze of markets you have to navigate, along with thousands of other tourists, to get to a vantage point to view the sunset.
However, visitors shouldn’t give Tanah Lot a miss because of this. Get there before sunset and give yourself time to wander the markets, grab some cheap food and get one of the best views (and a seat) from one of the clifftop warungs that oversee the temple. The sunset, or in my case a developing storm, will remind you of the spiritual view you came to see.
